Introduction of Region :

The shoulder joint is formed by the ball of the arm bone and the socket formed by the shoulder blade bone (Scapula).A broken shoulder is most commonly a fractured upper end humerus. A fracture is the medical term for a broken bone. When your humerus (Arm bone) is fractured near or at the ball of your shoulder joint, it is commonly known as a broken shoulder.

Causes of Fracture :

Various forces can cause fractures and dislocations of this region including pulling, impact, twisting, and bending. The result of an impact will clearly depend on the point of contact. By contrast, twisting injuries tend to damage the weakest part of the linked system. Forces such as falls on an outstretched arm create a bending force that is transmitted up the arm and commonly fractures the neck of the humerus.

Other than a fall, shoulder fractures can occur by ,

  • Direct impact (Assault, gunshot etc.)
  • Motor vehicle accident
  • Fall from two wheelers
  • Fall from height

Do I Require Surgery ? :

Most non-displaced fractures require immobilization in a sling until the fracture heals enough to be comfortable and permit motion without risk of dislodging the fracture fragments. X-rays are used to determine if sufficient healing has occurred to permit motion exercises. It is vital to maintain flexibility of the elbow, wrist and fingers while resting the shoulder. With your doctor’s guidance, you may commence shoulder movement as the fracture heals. If the arm is moved too early, this can delay healing, but too little movement will result in stiffness.
If the fracture fragments are displaced, surgical procedures may be necessary to bring the pieces together and fix them with wires, pins, plates or screws.

What are the Benefits of Surgery ? :

The benefits of surgery in a shoulder fracture are ,
  • Relief of pain by restoring the continuity of broken bone
  • Better alignment
  • Healing with best possible shoulder function

What is the recovery process ? :

This is often affected by the severity of your original injury. You may need assistance with dressing, bathing, washing and eating for five to 10 days. We will ensure that you have adequate amounts of pain medication to keep you comfortable. You will be allowed to mobilize with a sling from the next day and post-operative physiotherapy will also be started as soon as the patient becomes pain free. Your doctor will examine you and evaluate your X-rays to determine your progress. Your return to work will be earlier for a desk job, and later for labor-related occupations.

What are the risks in the Surgery ? :

Some of the risks of surgery of shoulder fractures include infection, wound healing problems, bleeding and injury to nerves and vessels near the fracture. Sometimes the shoulder gets very stiff. Occasionally, the fracture does not heal, and another operation may be recommended. In elderly patients or weak bones any form of forced exercises can lead to displacement of the fracture.

Does Age Affect Recovery ? :

Yes, In elderly patients or weak bones, the fracture healing may be adversely affected by implant loosening or post-operative fracture displacement.
