After surgery the range of motion (ROM) of the affected joints or parts near to the surgery are reduced due to fear, pain or immobilization.

With the help of range of motion exercises one can easily prevent it.

Range of motion exercises can be:

  1. Passive ROM

It is done by the therapist and mostly is used to prevent stiffness of the joint/ muscles and is used to maintain the range of motion in unconscious or semi conscious patient.

    2.  Active-assisted ROM

In this the therapist either initiates the patients movement or supports him/her to achieve full range while the patient performs the movement by his own effort.

    3. Active ROM

This is performed by the patient only in the pain free range i.e. the patient can perform the movement by his own till pain permits and as per the advice of the therapist.
